The Great Storm of October 1987

Stanmer Park has the largest area of woodland in Brighton most of that being in the Great Wood. On the night of 15th October 1987, unprecedented winds blustered across the South East of England. Numerous trees in Brighton & Hove were uprooted, and many buildings were damaged and Stanmer Park was not spared. The trees in the park suffered considerable damage, sadly 45% of the trees were destroyed.
