Thomas and Mary Jones’s eldest son, Frederick, was born at Stanmer in 1842, four years after Walter John Pelham, the 4th Earl of Chichester, with whom he was very friendly as a boy. The two men were well matched and often played cricket together.
Frederick married Caroline Dale on 31st December 1864 at Falmer Church. Although it is not known for certain that this photograph shows Caroline, it seems more than likely.
Caroline Dale died on the 8th December 1924
