12-3 Stanmer village -- festive fun and wreath-making

Church: currently in temporary use by Greek Orthodox church: Occasional events, see adverts

Museum: Winter opening: Thursdays 10-12 for volunteer work, open for groups by arrangement

Stanmer Rural Costume Project

Stanmer Rural Costume Project needs your help!

If you have any photos, information, recollections or have any ancestors who were married or christened at Stanmer Church please email us (sps.sussex@gmail.com)

To look at:

  • Clothes of everyday rural people;
  • Their construction and wearing, including clothes from local materials using traditional skills

To develop:

  • Displays including samples of processes, artefacts from the museum and/or information folders
  • Activities for themed/family days

Areas for focus

1) Evidence Collecting

a. Contrast and compare photos from the Stanmer archive with fashion plates etc. of the time

b. Use photos as a source of clothes to make for dressing up

c. Collect memories of clothes and their making from people

d. Look at local census returns for those in textile/dress making trade

2) Particular rural garments e.g. the smock

Look at the construction, decoration, traditions and make reproductions for dressing up

3) Reproductions clothes of rural people though history for trying on

4) Construction of clothes - processes in making clothes particularly at home

5) Care of clothes: laundry, repair etc.

6) Can a garment be made from materials sourced and processed locally?
