Re the paintings by Canadian Soilders I have flagged this up to SDNP Enforcement Team, however when they last visited the buildings were sealed up for health & safety reasons. But they will now keep this on file.

Walking up through Stanmer Park this morning:- shock, horror.
A good proportion of The Cherry Orchard has come under the chain saw.
Ever since the publication of the Colson Stone report in 2003/4 which recommended the removal of the Cherry Orchard certain Council departments have been keen to follow through the recommendation. Since the trees were planted to commemorate the coronation of Queen Elizabeth 11 they have become symbolic to Stanmer Park. The cuts on the trees look quite recent & if BHCC claim that the trees have died then the 'cull' is not yet over. From my memory of this years beautiful display not all of the trees so brutally butchered had died. One thing is certain subsequent years bloom will be much reduced.
Am I the only person to morn the demise of the Cherry Orchard?

Summary notes on SPS committee meeting Thursday 24th February 2010 in Museum

I promised to make available brief notes on meetings, based on the minutes that I take, mainly to let subscribers know what is happening and to give members an idea of what is involved in being a committee member - and to note that we do work quite hard! This message includes notes on the recent meeting and I welcome any feedback you have on this:
too much information, too little,
what you like,
what you don't like,
what you'd like to see done differently in these notes.

-- Hon Sec

Summary notes on SPS committee meeting Thursday 24th February 2010 in Museum
The meeting opened at 2.30 pm and closed at 4.10pm

Present: 9 members plus BHCC Park Ranger by invitation

Minutes of last meeting were read and agreed. The chair welcomed EO, one of the two Brighton & Hove Park Rangers allocated to the park. EO briefly described her role and said she was interested in making new links with SPS, being involved in joint events and helping with support from the council.

Matters arising from the minutes. Church clock had been checked and has no fault. It had stopped because of a stoppage in the electricity supply. Servicing has been done.

Conservation appraisal. We had submitted our 6-page report. 25th March is the date due for the final report. Insurance: the question of combining insurance for SPS into Stanmer House insurance.
FF noted thanks to WY on behalf of SPS for all his work on the website.
PG has agreed to be our wildlife representative.
JAC had had to miss the 25th Jan Access Road meeting. Under AOB at that meeting, the question of use of the village noticeboard was raised. JAC raised it at the following meeting 22 Feb and asked that the board be made available now. JAC to contact access forum to request this. AM noted that RA is a new member of SPS and is an architect. He will facilitate the request for a board on the barn.

Museum report: Museum volunteers have taken down a rotten beam damaged by water, and are investigating further and contacting Stanmer house leaseholder. Materials have been purchased to make new wheels for caravan. More items on display, painting tram shelter, outing for Beaver scouts to museum at Easter. Some parking problems outside: PG to be asked if she can produce a notice. Volunteer form for University of Sussex V project now approved: occasional volunteers will not need to be SPS members.

Stakeholder meeting: AM summarized presentation by Roger Dowty on new conservation area. Another meeting will be held early March, in preparation for ratifying on 25th March. Road will take longer than planned.

Wildlife report (NY for PG) PG has been attending meetings on our behalf and representing our views. The committee thanked PG for all the time and work put in.

Finance (AM): Grassroots community grant used for Christmas events: NY to ask whether we can use remaining for other uses. Other ideas for church events include Easter decoration making, Easter egg hunt, treasure hunt. Hedgcock application: We have been notified that our application for £1000, largely for equipment (computer, printer, scanner etc) is eligible for consideration and we will hear in about April if it is successful.

Church report (MS). Church continues to open on Sundays 2-5 with displays and resident pianist, and growing income being received through events and donations. Peter Owen Jones did a talk. Old donated computer and borrowed scanner temporarily installed for archiving. Future events: John Funnell, archaeologist, Vocal Explosion concert. Book sales continue successfully. Discussions about Springwatch.

Access Road: JAC reported that at the meeting on 23 Feb an announcement was made that the access road to the village will be closed for 10 days over Easter, dates finalized ‘in the next few weeks’. The meeting expressed concern about the effects on the park at a busy time and about emergency service access.

Newsletter (MS): coming along nicely.

Website (NY for WY as webmaster/ publicity): Website is constantly updated with events and reports. WY has also now set up a forum allowing anyone to discuss matters relating to the different aspects of SPS interests, including a forum just for Stanmer villagers. There will need to be a training session to help people to sign up and use it. NY will investigate CCE at the University of Sussex. The meeting thanked WY for his continuing work and initiative on this front.

Springwatch: want to focus on museum and church and on spinning, weaving and dyeing, getting people from SPS, nursery, rangers. At church on Sunday we will draw up a list of interested people and send it round for additions, to fix a planning meeting.

Proposed park bye-laws: JAC raised the issue of riders: the bye-laws would seek to restrict these. They also seek to get rid of bird-scarers but this is a misunderstanding of the nature of the area which includes rural farmland: needs of all park users have to be considered. Stanmer is a country park laid out with rides all the way round. Its character is therefore very different from other open spaces. FF noted that there are adequate bye-laws from late 1800s and these cover everything needed: the real issue is enforcement. There used to be police patrols in the day and at night. There are now 11 rangers for 96 open spaces so policing of bye-laws is very thinly stretched. Conservation area protection will supersede aspects of the existing bye-laws. For agenda next meeting.

AOB: FF suggested village social club writes to the council chief executive to say that we have been offered no suitable accommodation.
Next meeting: Thursday 1 April.
